Amazon launched an update to its Alexa Plus assistant that lets the AI voice platform reach deeper into your smart home. The upgrade, now rolling out in preview, connects Alexa Plus to washing machines, robot vacuums, door locks, thermostats, and smart plugs from brands like Bosch, Ecovacs, iRobot, Yale Home, Whirlpool, Tapo, and Eufy.

Rather than fumbling through app menus for each device, Alexa Plus can field a single spoken command and figure out which gadget to talk to. In a demo Amazon shared, a person says "Alexa, my kid's soccer jersey could use a deep clean, but the tag says cold wash only." The assistant parses the request, picks the right wash cycle on a connected washing machine, and starts the load — no manual cycle selection needed.
The update is powered by Amazon's new AI developer toolkit, which the company says makes it easier for device makers to link their hardware to Alexa Plus, even for gadgets with features that weren't supported before.
Alexa has been a fixture in smart homes since 2014, but the Plus tier, which launched widely this February, swaps simple one-shot commands for multi-step conversations. Users can say "Alexa, turn off the lights, lock the front door, and set the thermostat to 68" in one breath and the assistant handles all three. It can also string together routines from your daily habits — suggesting the lights dim at sunset or the heat kick in before you wake up.
How MCP Opens the Smart Home to More Brands
The key technical shift is Amazon adopting the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard that lets AI models reach outside their own sandbox to tap external services. Think of it as a universal adapter: instead of Amazon writing custom code for every brand's API, MCP gives each company a standard way to expose its device controls to Alexa.
That means more brands can join without Amazon having to build bespoke integrations for each one. Canva, Headspace, Priceline, Lyft, Virgin Atlantic, and Weekend are already lined up to launch Alexa Plus integrations later this year. For the smart home crowd, this matters because the IoT market has long suffered from fragmentation — your Philips Hue bulbs might work with Alexa but your Whirlpool washer might not. MCP could shrink that gap.
Priceline's integration is a good example: customers will be able to browse hotel options and book a trip entirely through Alexa Plus. And for services that need payment, Amazon Wallet will handle transactions through partners including Priceline, Atom Tickets, Cengage, Fandango, and Taskrabbit.

What This Means for the Broader IoT Market
Amazon's timing makes sense. The smart speaker market, once a high-growth category, has matured. Research firm IDC estimates global smart speaker shipments hit 198 million units in 2025, up just 4 percent from the prior year. Amazon still leads with an estimated 28 percent share, but the growth is in what the speaker can do, not how many ship.
The play here is about keeping users inside Amazon's ecosystem — but in a way that benefits those users if it works. Amazon wants Alexa Plus to be the brain of your home, the one interface you turn to for everything from checking the weather to starting laundry. Competing platforms like Google Home and Apple HomeKit are chasing the same vision, but Amazon's head start in the smart home gives it an edge. The company estimates more than 500 million Alexa-compatible devices have shipped globally, giving it the largest installed base of any voice platform.
There are caveats. Alexa Plus costs $9.99 a month after a free trial, and not every smart home owner wants to pay a subscription just to talk to their appliances. The first-party integrations with Ticketmaster, Uber, and OpenTable that launched in February have been useful but limited in scope. MCP could solve that by making the catalog of third-party skills effectively infinite — but that depends on developers actually building for it.
Security is another open question. Handing an AI assistant the ability to open doors, start appliances, and make purchases raises the stakes if something goes wrong. Amazon says all voice commands require a voice profile match and that Alexa Plus processes data locally where possible, but privacy advocates have raised concerns about ambient microphones in the home tied to a cloud AI model. The company has stated that voice recordings are encrypted and users can delete their history, but the trade-off between convenience and surveillance remains a live debate in the smart home community.
Amazon is also competing on reliability. During the preview period, the company says Alexa Plus will learn user preferences over time, getting better at predicting what you want rather than just reacting to commands. If it can correctly guess that you want the bedroom temperature at 67 degrees at 10 PM without being told every night, that's the kind of invisible intelligence the smart home has promised for years.
Contextual AI Meets Physical Devices
What sets this update apart from earlier Alexa iterations is contextual awareness. Previous versions of Alexa handled commands as isolated events — say "turn on the kitchen light" and it turns on. But the Plus tier can chain multiple device types, understand implicit requests, and route commands to the correct device without the user specifying which one.
A typical example: "Alexa, I'm going to bed" might now trigger the bedroom lights to dim to 20 percent, the thermostat to drop to 66 degrees, the front door to lock, and the security system to arm — all from one phrase, without the user having pre-programmed a routine. The AI figures out the most likely actions based on past behavior and device capabilities.
This contextual approach is where the IoT industry is headed broadly. Apple's HomeKit has gained Adaptive Lighting and auto-adjusting thermostat schedules. Google's Nest line uses AI to learn heating patterns. But Amazon's voice-first approach, combined with MCP's ability to onboard new device types quickly, could give it a real advantage in the race to make the smart home proactive rather than reactive.
Hands-Free Smart Locks: A Parallel Revolution
Separately, a new wave of smart locks is bringing facial recognition and ultrawideband (UWB) technology to front doors — and early reviews suggest the tech has finally matured. The Verge's Jennifer Pattison Tuohy tested four facial-recognition locks and found that the best of them, the $300 Eufy FamiLock E40, unlocks in under a second, doubles as a 2K video doorbell, and supports Matter over Wi-Fi for cross-ecosystem compatibility.
For users who prefer not to carry a phone as a key, facial recognition offers a real alternative. The E40 uses infrared structured light to map your face in 3D, and it worked even with sunglasses — something competing locks from Lockly and Switchbot struggled with. The tradeoff is battery life: the E40 dropped 40 percent charge in a week of testing.
These two stories — Amazon's AI voice push and the rise of hands-free smart locks — point in the same direction. The smart home is moving toward less friction: fewer taps, fewer apps, fewer passwords. Whether that future runs through Alexa, a facial scan, or something else, the end goal is the same. You walk up to your house, the door unlocks, you tell the room what you need, and the house handles the rest.
For the IoT ecosystem, the challenge is getting all those pieces to talk to each other. Amazon's MCP bet is one answer. The Matter standard — now backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung — is another. Both aim to solve the same problem: making the smart home actually feel smart, not just connected.
