Toyota's Next-Gen Corolla EV Steps Into the Spotlight as BYD and Tesla Force a "Sense of Crisis"

Toyota, the world's largest automaker by volume, is putting its most iconic nameplate on a new electric platform after its chairman admitted a "considerable sense of crisis" about falling behind Chinese rivals like BYD. In a rare behind-the-scenes look aired by Japanese broadcaster NHK on July 19, Toyota's top brass and engineers acknowledged the company needs to move faster on electrification — and the next-generation Corolla is where they plan to prove it.
The 50-minute special broadcast took viewers inside a "top-secret" development site where prototypes of the next Corolla are being tested. Chairman Akio Toyoda, the former CEO who remains deeply involved in Toyota's product direction, told NHK that the company's development cycles and manufacturing processes need a rethink. "There seems to be a considerable sense of crisis within the company," he said, using unusually candid language for the famously cautious Japanese automaker.
One Toyota engineer went further, telling the camera plainly: "I think we are losing to China." That admission sums up the pressure building inside Toyota's Nagoya headquarters. While the company held its position as the world's biggest carmaker in 2025, BYD has been eating into Toyota's market share across Asia, Europe, and Latin America with affordable electric vehicles that undercut Toyota's hybrid-heavy lineup.
A New Platform for Every Powertrain — But EVs Lead
The next-generation Corolla will ride on an entirely new platform designed to accommodate every powertrain option: battery electric, plug-in hybrid, traditional hybrid, and even internal combustion engines. CEO Koji Sato, who took the helm in April 2023, called it a car "packed with innovations" and insisted the focus is on making vehicles people genuinely want to buy, regardless of the technology under the hood.
"Whether it's a battery EV, plug-in hybrid, hybrid, or internal combustion engine vehicle — whatever the power source — let's make good-looking cars that everyone will want to drive," Sato said when the Corolla Concept debuted at the Japan Mobility Show last October.
The prototype shown during the NHK broadcast matched the concept closely: a low-slung silhouette with a sports-car-like front end, a closed-off grille, and a visible charge port — all telltale signs that the electric variant was the version under active development. The design language signals a clear break from the conservative styling that has defined the Corolla for six decades.
That shift in design philosophy matters because the Corolla isn't just any model. With over 57 million units sold across 12 generations since 1966, it surpassed the Volkswagen Beetle to become the best-selling vehicle in history. Getting the EV version right carries enormous symbolic weight for Toyota — this is the car that will either confirm or deny the company's ability to compete in the battery-electric era.
BYD's Shadow Over Toyota's Plans
The "sense of crisis" Toyoda described isn't theoretical. BYD, which stopped producing combustion-only vehicles in 2022, delivered 557,090 fully electric vehicles in the second quarter of 2026 alone — outselling Tesla globally for the third consecutive quarter. BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu has publicly stated his company will "truly become the No. 1 automaker globally in terms of scale" within five years. In 2025, BYD already surpassed Ford to become the world's sixth-largest automaker.
Toyota's response has been to hedge. The company's current EV lineup — the bZ4X crossover (sold as the bZ in some markets), the C-HR+, and the bZ Woodland — has gained modest traction, but none have matched the sales velocity of comparable BYD models. In China, Toyota's share of the new-energy vehicle market has shrunk as BYD's Seagull, Dolphin, and Atto 3 dominate the affordable end of the spectrum.

The decision to build a multi-powertrain platform rather than a dedicated electric skateboard chassis has drawn criticism from industry analysts. Toyota's development of the Corolla EV comes on the heels of a real setback. Last month, the company canceled the Lexus LF-ZC, which was supposed to be its flagship electric sedan featuring next-generation solid-state batteries and advanced manufacturing techniques. The cancellation removed one of Toyota's most high-profile EV announcements from its timeline and raised questions about the company's battery technology roadmap.
Toyota has long promised solid-state batteries that would deliver double the energy density of current lithium-ion cells, potentially offering 1,000 miles of range and a 10-minute fast charge. But repeated delays have eroded confidence in those timelines. The Corolla EV, by contrast, appears to be a more pragmatic project — a mass-market electric car built on proven technology rather than bleeding-edge battery chemistry.
Akio Toyoda described the Corolla as "a symbol of Toyota" in the NHK interview. That symbolism cuts both ways. If the Corolla EV fails to match the quality, range, or price of competitors from BYD, Hyundai, or Tesla, it would signal that Toyota's transition strategy isn't working. But if the company gets it right, the Corolla nameplate could give Toyota a foothold in the mass-market EV space that even BYD might struggle to dislodge — because 57 million customers already know and trust the name.
The Global EV Race Toyota Must Face
The competitive pressure isn't limited to China. In Europe, June 2026 marked the first time battery electric vehicles outsold every other powertrain in Germany, the country where the internal combustion engine was invented. BEVs captured 28.4% market share — enough to push past hybrids, gasoline, and diesel for the first time. For Toyota, the road ahead requires executing on multiple fronts simultaneously. The Corolla EV needs to arrive on time, priced competitively against the BYD Seagull (which starts under $10,000 in China) and the Tesla Model 3 (around $39,000 in the US), and equipped with charging and software capabilities that meet modern expectations. The company's Battery Tech investments in solid-state and LFP chemistry need to translate into production-ready cells rather than lab demonstrations.
Toyota has the manufacturing scale, the dealer network, and the brand recognition to compete. What it lacks is speed. As the BYD engineer would put it, the race is already underway — and Toyota can't afford to keep hedging its bets.
