PHILADELPHIA — Comcast has flipped the switch on a feature that turns its Xfinity gateways into whole-home motion detectors, rolling out Wi-Fi sensing to millions of existing routers at no extra cost starting August 18. The update, delivered through the Xfinity Internet app, enables XB7 and newer gateways to detect movement by analyzing disruptions in Wi-Fi signals between the router and connected devices — no cameras, no additional hardware, no subscription required.
The capability arrives as part of Xfinity Shield, a new free security suite that also bundles advanced threat protection against malware and phishing plus expanded parental controls. For Comcast's roughly 32 million internet subscribers, it represents the largest single deployment of Wi-Fi sensing technology to date, dwarfing earlier attempts by Linksys, Wiz, and Philips Hue that either stalled or required proprietary bulbs and bridges.
How Wi-Fi Motion Works Without Cameras
The principle is straightforward: Wi-Fi signals propagate through a home like an invisible web, reflecting off walls, furniture, and people. When a person moves through that field, the signal pattern shifts in measurable ways. Comcast's implementation, built on technology licensed from Origin Wireless — the same company ADT acquired in 2024 — samples channel state information from the gateway's radios and runs it through algorithms trained to distinguish human motion from pets, fans, or passing traffic outside.
Channel state information, or CSI, captures the amplitude and phase of each subcarrier across the Wi-Fi channel. In a typical OFDM system, that means hundreds of data points per packet, refreshed every few milliseconds. Origin's algorithms compare successive CSI snapshots to build a statistical model of the empty room, then flag deviations that match human gait patterns — step frequency, torso height, movement speed. The gateway's existing MIMO antennas provide spatial diversity, letting the system locate motion to a general zone rather than just detecting presence.
"We have spent the last three years advancing the algorithms for WiFi Motion and tightening up some of the irregularities that came with the early versions of Wi-Fi sensing," said Kohposh Kuda, senior vice president of consumer products at Xfinity. "We're at a point where we feel confident in the WiFi Motion capability that customers can use this for motion detection in their home and for a basic level of security."
The system requires an XB7 or newer gateway — models shipped since roughly 2021 — and opts in through the Xfinity app. Three sensing modes address different scenarios: Home Watch for when occupants are present, Away Watch for empty-house monitoring, and Dark Watch, a night mode that suppresses alerts during sleep hours. Notifications arrive in the app when motion is detected, with sensitivity adjustable to reduce false positives from pets.

From Niche Feature to Mass-Market Standard
Wi-Fi sensing has hovered at the edges of the smart home market for years. Linksys launched Linksys Aware in 2021 on its Velop AXE8400 mesh system, promising whole-home motion detection without cameras. The service required a subscription and was quietly discontinued a few years later. Wiz introduced Wi-Fi-sensing smart bulbs in 2023, but the approach tied sensing to lighting fixtures — limiting coverage to rooms with Wiz bulbs. Philips Hue took a different path in 2024, deploying radio-frequency sensing over Zigbee in its Hue Motion sensors and newer lights, which works well within the Hue ecosystem but doesn't use the router already sitting in the hallway.
Comcast's play is different in scale and economics. By pushing the feature to gateways already deployed in tens of millions of homes, the company bypasses the hardware adoption curve that killed earlier efforts. The feature is free, opt-in, and managed through the same app customers already use to manage Wi-Fi passwords and parental controls. For the average household, Kuda acknowledged, "this provides an adequate level of security protection" — though Xfinity stops short of positioning it as a replacement for professionally monitored alarm systems with cameras and door sensors.
That paid tier exists separately as Xfinity Shield Select, a $15-per-month service that adds an indoor camera, door/window sensor, cloud video storage, and 24/7 urgent response. The free Wi-Fi sensing layer sits beneath it, a baseline that costs Comcast virtually nothing to maintain once the software is deployed.

The Aging-in-Place Angle
Beyond basic security, Comcast sees Wi-Fi motion as infrastructure for aging-in-place services. A router that knows when someone hasn't moved from the bedroom by noon, or detects a fall-like pattern in the bathroom, could trigger wellness checks for elderly relatives living alone. Several companies are already building in this direction: ADT's Origin Wireless acquisition explicitly targeted senior care applications, and startup Caspar.ai has pitched similar router-based monitoring to property managers and insurers.
The technical foundation is the same — channel state information analysis — but the classification models shift from "intruder vs. pet" to "normal routine vs. anomaly." That transition from security to health monitoring is where Comcast believes the long-term value lies. "We believe this is the foundation for what we think we can do with more advanced use cases," Kuda said.
Privacy and the Opt-In Model
Any technology that maps movement inside a home raises privacy questions. Comcast addresses this with an opt-in design: Wi-Fi sensing is off by default, requires explicit activation in the app, and can be toggled off at any time. The raw channel state data never leaves the gateway; only motion events — timestamp, zone, confidence level — are sent to the cloud for notification delivery. Comcast says it does not sell the data or use it for advertising.
Still, the gateway sees every Wi-Fi device in the home: phones, laptops, smart TVs, thermostats, voice assistants. The motion detection piggybacks on that existing visibility. For customers who already trust Comcast with their internet traffic, the incremental privacy cost may feel small. For others, the idea of the ISP knowing when you walk to the kitchen at 2 a.m. will remain a non-starter.
What This Means for the Smart Home Outlook
Comcast's rollout changes the calculus for every smart home platform. Matter, the industry's interoperability standard, has been adding sensing capabilities — Matter 1.4 introduced ambient motion sensing over Thread — but adoption depends on device manufacturers building new hardware. Comcast just turned sensing into a software update for hardware already in the field.
For router makers like Eero, Google Nest Wifi, and Asus, the pressure mounts to match the feature or risk losing a differentiator. Eero, owned by Amazon, has the hardware and the Alexa ecosystem to build something similar. Google's Nest Wifi Pro supports Thread and could theoretically add sensing via software. Neither has announced a comparable mass-market rollout.
Other ISPs are watching closely. Charter's Spectrum division has tested similar technology in limited markets, and Verizon's FiOS gateway hardware could support CSI-based sensing with a firmware update. In Europe, Deutsche Telekom and BT have run pilot programs with router-based presence detection for elderly care. The difference is scale: Comcast just turned the feature on for its entire eligible base in a single day.
The broader IoT implication is that the router is becoming the central sensor hub of the connected home — not just the traffic cop for packets. As Wi-Fi 7 and 8 bring higher bandwidth, more antennas, and finer channel resolution, the sensing fidelity will only improve. The gateway that once only knew which devices were online may soon know where people are, how they move, and whether their patterns look normal.
For now, Comcast has a head start measured in millions of gateways and a brand that already manages the pipe into the home. Whether subscribers activate the feature — and whether they trust it enough to rely on it — will determine if Wi-Fi sensing becomes as standard as the Wi-Fi password.
