BMW Delivers Two-Millionth EV as Neue Klasse iX3 Leads Europe's Electric Surge

BMW delivered its two-millionth battery electric vehicle this week, completing the sale of an i5 M60 xDrive sedan to a customer in Spain. The company confirmed the milestone on September 4, 2026, roughly eleven years after it began series EV production with the original i3 city car launched in 2013.

The pace tells the story of BMW's electric pivot. The first million took about eleven years. The second took just two, powered by the Neue Klasse platform and by European appetite for the iX3 crossover, the first series-production model on the new architecture. BMW sold more than 81,000 pure EVs in the second quarter of 2026 alone, almost all of them iX3s and i5s.

The two-millionth vehicle was a Dingolfing-made i5 M60 xDrive, coincidentally the same specification as the two-millionth electric car built a few months earlier, also destined for a Spanish buyer. Sales of BMW EVs across Europe increased 38% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, lifting pure electric cars to 28% of the brand's European registrations.

Europe Leads BMW's Electric Momentum

BMW's European growth rests on the iX3 and the Neue Klasse architecture that underpins it. One in three fully electric BMWs sold globally since the model's 2025 debut is an iX3, and the crossover represents half of all X3 family sales worldwide. Jochen Goller, the management board member for customer, brands and sales, said the company is approaching 100,000 new orders for the iX3 in Europe.

"In Europe, the positive development has continued since the market launch of the BMW iX3," Goller said. "This underscores the importance of the Neue Klasse for the ongoing ramp-up of electromobility at the BMW Group."

The iX3 was the first EV available in the UK with up to 500 miles of range under BMW's official figures, and it earned World Car of the Year honors after its launch. The line expanded with a rear-motor iX3 40 priced from €63,400 in Germany, roughly €7,500 below the flagship xDrive50, giving buyers a lower-cost entry into the Neue Klasse family.

BMW's current EV portfolio includes the iX1, iX2, i4, i5, and iX SUV. Every future electric model from the company will use the Neue Klasse underpinnings, starting with the i3 sedan, whose first deliveries reach European customers this autumn.

Debrecen Plant Achieves Record Ramp-Up

BMW's factory in Debrecen, Hungary produced its 50,000th iX3 on July 28, 2026 — nine months after series production began — marking the fastest start-up of any newly built plant in the group's manufacturing history, per company sources.

A second shift commenced in February 2026, ahead of the original plan, allowing the facility to keep pace with demand that had already topped 50,000 orders by mid-March — just six months after order books opened in September 2025. Debrecen assembles the iX3 in two versions: the dual-motor xDrive50 that debuted the model, and the rear-motor iX3 40 that followed at a more accessible price point.

Raymond Wittmann, the BMW AG board member for production, called the 50,000th iX3 a sign of "the capabilities of our plant in Debrecen." He added that launch insights flow into a shared digital database used across the network to support 40 new or updated Neue Klasse models BMW plans by the end of 2027. The group's factories exchange quality data and production analytics, so problems caught in Hungary can be stopped before they appear in Mexico or China.

Hans-Peter Kemser, president and CEO of BMW Group Plant Debrecen, praised the local team and said Debrecen's experience now informs ramp-ups at sister sites around the world. At full output, the Hungarian facility can build 150,000 iX3 units a year, about three times the volume needed to reach 50,000 units this summer. BMW will begin assembling the standard-wheelbase iX3 at its San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico during the second half of 2027, extending Neue Klasse production to three continents.

The iX3 xDrive50, weighing 2,285 kg, secured a five-star Euro NCAP rating in July 2026 under the assessor's stricter new testing protocol, with Euro NCAP noting it could be the safest BMW the organization has ever tested.

i3 Sedan Marks Munich's Electric Chapter

BMW began series production of the i3 sedan — the Neue Klasse's second model — at its Munich home plant earlier this month and opened customer orders in mid-June, ahead of schedule after early interest exceeded expectations. The launch represents a new chapter for the Munich facility, which has produced premium combustion vehicles for over a hundred years and is now transitioning its core operations toward electric powertrains.

European deliveries start this autumn, with US sales following in 2027. An i3 Touring wagon arrives in 2027 to serve wagon buyers, and a coupe-styled iX4 is expected within months. The roadmap continues with an iX5 electric SUV and a larger iX7 in 2027, while an iX6 coupe-style SUV could appear as early as 2028.

BMW is also developing an i1 hatchback and an i2 sedan for release closer to the end of the decade, offering electric alternatives to the 1 Series and 2 Series Gran Coupe for cost-conscious buyers who have so far delayed EV adoption. Those models will be critical to BMW's stated goal of pushing electric sales past half of all deliveries across its three brands by 2030.

China and the US Move on Slower Timelines

Europe is not the only market in play. The long-wheelbase Neue Klasse iX3 developed for China entered pre-sales with first deliveries planned for November 2026, assembled locally rather than shipped from Hungary. China also plays host to local assembly of the i3 sedan for its market, reflecting the importance of domestic production for tariff and supply-chain reasons.

In the United States, standard-wheelbase iX3 deliveries begin this autumn, later than the European launch, and BMW's overall EV penetration in North America still trails Europe by a wide margin. The compact i1 and i2 models, still several years from launch, will be needed to lift American sales ratios closer to the European benchmark.

Pure electric vehicles contributed 17.7% of total BMW Group deliveries — including Mini and Rolls-Royce — in the first half of 2026. That figure understates the direction of travel in Europe, where battery-electric models already represent more than a quarter of new BMW registrations and the share keeps climbing as production capacity catches up with demand. The gap between Europe and other markets points to a broader industry pattern: infrastructure buildout, purchase incentives, and regulatory pressure vary widely across regions, creating uneven adoption curves even for brands with competitive product lines.

Beyond Two Million

BMW's cumulative electrified vehicle sales since the 2014 i3 launch total roughly 3.5 million, with pure EVs outnumbering plug-in hybrids by about half a million units. The two-million mark is symbolic, but the underlying numbers are concrete: a factory that went from greenfield to 50,000 units in nine months, an order book approaching six figures for a single model, and a European market where one new BMW in four runs on battery power alone. Those metrics show the scale needed to compete in an electrified market where every legacy automaker is racing to reorient decades of combustion-engine infrastructure toward battery production and EV assembly. BMW's Debrecen success story is part of a broader industry shift playing out across multiple brands and continents, with Europe leading the way.

The three-million milestone could arrive faster still. As Neue Klasse production spreads to Mexico and China, and as the i3 sedan, iX4, iX5 and i7 join the lineup, BMW faces the same question every legacy automaker confronts during an electric transition: whether manufacturing scale can keep pace with customer demand in every region, the way it has in Europe.
