Amazon announced Wednesday that its Prime Air drone delivery service will expand to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026 — a sixfold jump from the service's current 11-site footprint across 10 metropolitan areas. According to Amazon's announcement, the rollout follows Federal Aviation Administration certification upgrades from 2024 that permit longer-range flights using onboard detect-and-avoid technology. Prime Air plans to launch next in the Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise metro areas, with more communities to follow later in the year.

The service currently delivers packages weighing 5 pounds or less within roughly 7.5 miles of fulfillment centers in Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas. Each site covers an area of about 175 square miles, which is how a few dozen facilities can reach hundreds of communities — Amazon counts every town touched by the service rather than every launch pad. Prime Air says it has completed hundreds of thousands of deliveries this year and is flying thousands more each day. Eligible items span groceries, cosmetics, medications, and electronics, including iPhones, AirPods, and Ring doorbells. Prime members get free drone delivery on orders of at least $50 and pay $2.99 for smaller baskets, while non-Prime customers pay $4.99.

A Crowded Sky: Rivals Scale Their Own Networks

Amazon isn't expanding into an empty sky. On July 29, DoorDash launched DoorDash Air after becoming the eighth company to receive the FAA's Part 135 air carrier certification — the license required to fly other people's property beyond a pilot's line of sight. DoorDash is developing its own aircraft and plans to route orders to drones inside the same dispatch system that already assigns work to human couriers and ground robots, according to DoorDash's launch release.

Alphabet's Wing has crossed 1 million commercial deliveries and is building a network with Walmart that could span more than 270 locations serving over 40 million Americans by 2027, per Wing's market announcement. Uber joined the race on August 17, partnering with Zipline — which has completed more than 2 million deliveries worldwide — to attach drone drop-offs to Uber Eats, as Reuters reported. The companies are aiming for a million drone deliveries a day by the end of 2029.

The money is following the flight hours. Airbound, a three-year-old Indian startup, raised a $37 million Series A round led by Greenoaks on August 25, with DoorDash, Lachy Groom, Lightspeed, and Humba Ventures participating, TechCrunch reported. That brings the Bengaluru company to nearly $50 million raised less than a year after its $8.65 million seed round.

Ground-level deployments are multiplying too. On August 25, Michigan's Jack Demmer Automotive Group announced a state-funded program with Airspace Link and Drone Technology Partners to fly auto parts between dealerships in Wayne County, per PR Newswire — a reminder that beyond consumer parcels, the near-term money in drone logistics is in business-to-business freight that saves mechanics hours of waiting for a part.

Airbound's approach differs from the quadcopter fleets above American suburbs. Its tail-sitter drones take off standing on their tails like a rocket, then tip over into efficient horizontal flight. Founder and CEO Naman Pushp told TechCrunch the current TRT aircraft weighs about 3.3 pounds while carrying a 2.2-pound load, and a next-generation model under development should weigh 6.6 pounds while hauling up to 11 pounds — an aircraft lighter than its cargo, which is the whole point. Every gram saved on airframe is a gram available for payload, and payload weight is where delivery economics live.

The startup has logged more than 13,000 autonomous flights across Bengaluru and Guntur, including over 1,000 flights ferrying diagnostic samples for hospital network Narayana Health. One active drone covers a 2.5-mile route in about seven minutes; the same samples can spend three to five hours on a motorbike when road traffic and sample batching are factored in. Airbound has signed an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh state government targeting 10,000 flights a day across three cities — a network that would need between 250 and 1,000 aircraft depending on route lengths.

The Regulatory Math Behind 500 Cities

None of this scales without regulators. The FAA's Part 135 certification governs operators carrying others' property by drone beyond visual line of sight, and Amazon holds the additional 2024 permission for longer-range BVLOS flights using onboard detect-and-avoid systems rather than human visual observers. That regulatory foundation matters more than any single airframe: Wing's Walmart network, Zipline's Uber Eats deal, and DoorDash's in-house fleet all depend on the same certification pathway, and each new metro launch requires airspace approval on top of it.

Trade policy is entering the picture too. Washington has moved to impose new tariffs on foreign-made drones and components, including a 100 percent tariff on aircraft deemed sensitive to national security concerns. DoorDash has made a point of saying its drone was designed in the United States with mostly American components. Amazon's MK30 aircraft is built in-house, which insulates the company from the worst-case tariff exposure that could raise costs for importers of Chinese-built platforms. For a business where per-delivery margins are measured in cents, hardware cost swings matter.

Safety scrutiny hasn't gone away. Two Amazon drones collided with a crane in Tolleson, Arizona, in October 2025, triggering federal investigations and a temporary pause in local flights. The next month, the FAA opened a separate inquiry after a Prime Air drone struck and severed an internet cable in Waco, Texas. Nobody was hurt in either case, but both incidents feed the argument of critics who say the skies over neighborhoods shouldn't double as freight corridors. Amazon's response has been procedural: its drones survey the drop zone with cameras and sensors, hold off if people, pets, or vehicles wander in, and release the package only when the area is clear. The company says the cameras exist for navigation and obstacle detection, not surveillance, and that no employee watches a live video feed.

From 2013 Demo to 2026 Rollout

The scale of Wednesday's announcement reads differently once you count the years behind it. Jeff Bezos demonstrated the Prime Air concept on national television in December 2013, promising deliveries within five years. The first actual customer deliveries arrived in late 2022, in Lockeford, California, and College Station, Texas — two towns, not five hundred. The aircraft changed along the way: the hexagonal prototype gave way to the MK30, a quieter twin-rotor design built for dense suburbs, and the FAA's 2024 BVLOS approval removed the need for spotters standing in fields with radios.

That timeline is the honest benchmark. Drone delivery spent its first decade as a demonstration in search of a business model; the current wave is the first where certification, hardware, and demand arrive together. Amazon says hundreds of thousands of deliveries have already gone out this year, thousands per day — numbers that would have sounded like science fiction when the program was a single prototype hovering over an indoor stage.

What Shoppers Will Actually See

For customers inside an eligible ZIP code, drone delivery shows up as an option during checkout — no special app, no waiting list. Most products weighing 5 pounds or less that fit inside a large shoebox qualify, which Amazon estimates covers more than 60 percent of the items people order most often. Delivery windows run from 30 minutes on the fast end to about an hour typically. Not every address within a listed ZIP code will qualify, and Amazon hasn't published the full list of the nearly 500 communities in its plan, so coverage maps will fill in gradually through the fall.

Watch three numbers through the rest of 2026: how many of the five announced metros actually go live, whether Zipline and Uber Eats hit their first deliveries before year-end, and whether Airbound converts its Andhra Pradesh agreement into daily flight volume.
